In this first ethnographic study of the politics of the average female citizen in Japan, Robin LeBlanc argues that this taxi-bicycle contrast reaches deeply into Japanese society.

To study the relationship between gender and liberal democratic citizenship, LeBlanc conducted extensive ethnographic fieldwork in suburban Tokyo among housewives, volunteer groups, consumer cooperative movements, and the members of a committee to reelect a female Diet member who used her own housewife status as the key to victory. LeBlanc argues that contrary to popular perception, Japanese housewives are ultimately not without a political world.

Although engineering is one of the professions that actually allows someone to build and create something that could eventually change the life of people (e.g., personal computer or satellite), there is sometimes a lack of motivation from the students in the classroom. It is quite clear that the students are comfortable with math, especially at the senior level. Therefore, the lack of motivation is not due to background deficiency. Instead, the discouragement increases when students do not correlate the subject taught with their future professional activities. Also, the way traditional lectures are set up--with theory presentation followed by examples where students just need to plug in the given data into specific equations--does not keep students’ interest and attention. In fact, the moment of solving a specific problem, in a traditional way to teach, comes down to this question: what’s the equation that I need to use to plug these given numbers? This is stimulated by the way the problems are designed. We hope that this book offers an alternative on how the students view and address the problems in power electronics. This book is a desirable didactic material to be employed as a reference book instead of a text book (from which the instructor prepares his/her lecture). Notice that the terminology used in A Hundred Solved Problems in Power Electronics is not necessarily the same as the one seen in either the text book or from the instructor lectures. This is actually a benefit for the students in electrical engineering since they will learn different terms for the same component or electrical element. Certainly this difference in nomenclature will be seen by the students as an advantage when they are reading technical datasheets and realize that manufacturers often use different terms for the same information. By dividing this book into five parts, the authors compile the solved problems into the following categories: 1) Converters with power diodes 2) SCR converters 3) Dc-dc converters 4) Dc-ac converters 5) Isolated dc-ac converters Such a book structure follows the same sequence of topics as most power electronics books in the technical literature, which simplifies the use of A Hundred Solved Questions in Power Electronics as a recommended book in parallel with other references.

Research on lipid mediators initially started with analysis of the action of aspirin, and subsequent biochemical experiments identified many enzymes and receptors responsible for the biosynthesis and signal transduction of individual lipid mediators. Through the phenotypic analyses of transgenic and knockout mice, it has been shown that the dysregulation of some lipid mediators causes inflammatory, immune, or oncogenic disorders. Lipid mediators have attracted increased attention because their structures are conserved among different species, and their biosynthetic and signaling pathways have been deciphered at the molecular level. Many drugs that target lipid mediators are already being used in hospitals, and this book suggests further possibilities for development of a wide variety of such drugs. Very recently, highly sensitive mass spectrometry has begun to be used to identify novel lipid mediators that are present only in trace amounts in tissues but with robust biological activity. Written by international experts, this book provides readers a comprehensive view of lipid mediators and related topics and helps in the process of determining research targets for the near future.

During the earliest decades of Virginia history, some men and women who arrived in the New World as slaves achieved freedom and formed a stable community on the Eastern shore. Holding their own with white neighbors for much of the 17th century, these free blacks purchased freedom for family members, amassed property, established plantations, and acquired laborers. T.H. Breen and Stephen Innes reconstruct a community in which ownership of property was as significant as skin color in structuring social relations. Why this model of social interaction in race relations did not survive makes this a critical and urgent work of history.
In a new foreword, Breen and Innes reflect on the origins of this book, setting it into the context of Atlantic and particularly African history.

The Holy Office of the Inquisition (a royal tribunal that addressed issues of heresy and offenses to morality) was established in Peru in 1570 and operated there until 1820. In this book, Ana E. Schaposchnik provides a deeply researched history of the Inquisition’s Lima Tribunal, focusing in particular on the cases of persons put under trial for crypto-Judaism in Lima during the 1600s.
            Delving deeply into the records of the Lima Tribunal, Schaposchnik brings to light the experiences and perspectives of the prisoners in the cells and torture chambers, as well as the regulations and institutional procedures of the inquisitors. She looks closely at how the lives of the accused—and in some cases the circumstances of their deaths—were shaped by actions of the Inquisition on both sides of the Atlantic. She explores the prisoners’ lives before and after their incarcerations and reveals the variety and character of prisoners’ religiosity, as portrayed in the Inquisition’s own sources. She also uncovers individual and collective strategies of the prisoners and their supporters to stall trials, confuse tribunal members, and attempt to ameliorate or at least delay the most extreme effects of the trial of faith.
            The Lima Inquisition also includes a detailed analysis of the 1639 Auto General de Fe ceremony of public penance and execution, tracing the agendas of individual inquisitors, the transition that occurred when punishment and surveillance were brought out of hidden dungeons and into public spaces, and the exposure of the condemned and their plight to an avid and awestricken audience. Schaposchnik contends that the Lima Tribunal’s goal, more than volume or frequency in punishing heretics, was to discipline and shape culture in Peru.
